Week 2 has welcomed more new students and many new friendships are being formed!
Below is an update of what has been happening in a few of the classes so far. Blogs are currently shared only with enrolled families sharing more detailed progress updates.. Families may also like to join our Instagram (jungle.academy) or Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/jungleacademy) as we'll be posting fun pics of the student activities more routinely there!
CLASS UPDATES
English: PBL Community
We went over some terms and definitions and examples of community, volunteering and partnerships. Discussed with students that they will be creating and implementing a project in the community help the community in which they live. Students brainstormed ideas of possible projects which they will choose from.
Math: Applied in Permaculture
Students walked the land and made observations, then made connections between their observations, small and large. We discussed what is Permaculture, what it includes, and how we use math in Permaculture. Calculating distances, areas, volumes, data collection, and graphing. We concluded the class by planting beans, Indian lettuce, and butterfly pea flowers.
Math: Nuts and Bolts
In order to see where the students currently are in their math skills, we did some exercises using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Then the students worked on and completed the multiplication times table from 0 to 12
Math: Games and Puzzles
Students warmed up their brains with Sudoko, continued with math crosswords that involved multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. We concluded the class with a math brain teaser where the students worked together to solve.
English: Global Connections & Conversations
We talked about the purpose of the class, explained that students will be teaching conversational English to kids of their age who are learning English as a second language. Students brainstormed questions they would ask their peers to get to know them better. They also had fun doing some role playing activities
in common scenarios such as at the doctors office and a clothing shop.
Music: Jungle Fantasia Beatles
Wednesday music focuses on Beatles songs. Class started with some group connection time in an open free drum jam. Students then began getting familiar with the lyrics, which turned out to be rather wordy! Some of the songs had an odd time signature so time was spent working through this. While a little quiet to start, students steadily gained comfort with singing aloud, which was music to the ears, literally!
Young Naturalist
In the first “young naturalist” class we got to know each other, the teacher showed the students how we would be using Google Classroom for assignments, we learned what a naturalist is and how it is different from a biologist. After that, we looked at a slide show on some of the different birds of the South Pacific of Costa Rica and what to look for in identifying a bird in the field. We started to go for a walk to look for birds, but ran out of time, so we will continue this activity at the beginning of next class.st “young naturalist” class we got to know each other, the teacher showed the students how we would be using Google Classroom for assignments, we learned what a naturalist is and how it is different from a biologist. The class ended with a short walk to look for birds, and future classes will have longer walks and off-site ventures to continue with observations.
Drama: Jungle Fantasia
Last week after connecting as a group and reading through the rough draft on the script, we switched to warm up and improvisation exercise’s which I must say the kids are really getting into experimenting with their voices and characters !
